Aqua Yoga is great for a wide range of people, from the super-fit to those who have severely limited mobility. The resistance to movement, caused by the water, can help strengthen you as you perform the movements – and the buoyancy of being in the pool can help you find more balance in positions that you might never have thought attainable to you.
You don’t need to be able to swim to do Aqua Yoga – and it’s a great way to begin to get over the fear of being in the water. Practising the Yoga movements in the pool (whilst keeping your head above water) can help you to forget that you’re in the water – so that you begin to associate being in the water with feeling good, as opposed to being afraid.
Aqua Yoga can be particularly liberating for anyone who struggles to stand up unaided outside of the pool – or anyone who struggles with finding exercise classes that are suitable for anyone with a bigger body.
Even if you’re extremely fit but recovering from an injury, this can be the perfect way to slowly rediscover strength and flexibility in a setting that is safe. You don’t have to worry about issues regarding high impact when you’re in the pool – as the water will support your weight. This is a why hydrotherapy is used so often by athletes when they are recovering from an injury.
Not only that – it’s also a lot of fun, and a good excuse to have a splash about in the pool!
